NAGA PANCHAMI

Look for an ant-hill
As we moved into the new house
Should have an ant-hill near-by
Rituals, traditions and beliefs.

Look for an ant-hill
Today is our Naga-Panchami
Second time asked my wife as she is preparing for
Celebrating festival by pouring cow-milk into it.

Naga--the sacred serpent
Necklace around the neck of Shiva
The most sacred only in the myths and mythologies
But posing a real threat to our life-style.

Flowers, leaves, camphor and khadi-thread
Coconut and incense sticks
A tumbler full of cow-milk
To worship sacred venomous serpent.

Drums are beaten pipes are blown
'Nandi-Kolu' troupe played
Children gayed with procession of temple palanquin
A token of performing Pooja.

Newly wedded couple, couple of middle age,
Couple of old age gathered at ant-hills
Unmarried girls gathered at entwined serpents on the platforms
Traditional Pooja is performed ritually.

Children played
People talked with their heads off
Teachers. clerks, farmers, and men of all trades
Relished with dishes of Naga-panchami
